Why is the fifth wheel trailer called such?

The fifth wheel trailer is called this because the camper is mounted to the bed of a truck with a device called a fifth wheel. From the front of the fifth wheel trailer box a hitch extends. This hitch goes over the tow vehicle on a horizontal plate, so it appears as though a wheel is resting on the tow for support. The tow vehicle for the fifth wheel trailer will often be a full-sized truck.
