Preparing Your First Grownup Camping Trip
Even if you’ve gone camping with your parents, chances are that you’ll want to study these rules before leaving for your own vacation.
Although it may not seem important, start by checking your tent and other camping equipment. Try your tent in the yard the week before you plan to leave. Make sure all of the tent’s parts are accounted for and in working order. Rain can seep through holes in the top and bottom of the tent, so check it thoroughly.
Check any inflatable mattresses for leaks before you pack it. Keep in mind that the temperature could drop precipitously at night, so take an extra blanket to keep you warm.
If you intend cooking at the campsite, remember that you need to take everything you will need to prepare a meal. Take one or two small pots usually suffice, a grid for the fire so you can barbecue, and all the crockery and cutlery you think you may need. Bringing a small gas cooker will make it more convenient to cook so you don’t have to start a fire for every meal or cup of coffee. Consider refilling the gas before you leave. Cleaning materials will be needed to ensure you have clean dishes.
Make sure nothing has been opened and is sealed tightly to prevent spills of your non-perishable foods. Pack any condiments and spices you like, it is often forgotten. To avoid getting dry food wet, keep liquids in plastic bags. Also try to keep all of your food in one general container so you can use it as a pantry during your camping trip. Perishable foods should be kept at a minimum, and packed last, buy any perishable foods you need as you go along.
You may need your own plug for the bath, so invest in a few sizes, also do not forget any other toiletries, including toilet paper. If the campsite has communal ablutions, take plastic thongs to wear in the bathroom. A basket or small bag can be quite useful for traveling to and from the ablutions and helps to avoid dropping your underwear in full view of the entire campsite.
Being well organized means you can enjoy everything nature has to offer.
